Valor Mortis Combat Guide: Parry, Posture and Firearms

Create a safe opening instead of attacking until a health bar empties. Separate defensive inputs and check what the current weapon permits.

Commitment and counterattacks

Confirmed. The publisher's Xbox Wire tips explain that hits/parries break posture, a swing cannot cancel into a parry, and a counter immediately after blocking restores block-lost health.

A concrete melee-to-firearm sequence

Reported. Fextralife's October 14 Combat page describes Endurance, red unblockable cues and posture finishers. The resource loop also appears in the official launch tips.

  1. Choose a weapon with the defense you intend to use; Method's beginner setup uses the Saber for block and parry. Approach without already committing a heavy swing.
  2. Read the incoming attack. For a normal melee strike, time the parry near impact; if you block, look for a safe immediate melee counter to recover the blocked damage.
  3. When the enemy signals a red unblockable attack, dodge instead of holding block. Reposition before taking the recovery opening.
  4. Build the enemy's posture meter with successful melee hits and parries. When it breaks, use the critical/finisher opportunity.
  5. Switch to a firearm for a visible weak point. Its hit refills Nephtoglobin; Fire can then ignite an enemy and open a finisher, as the combat guide describes.
  6. Check your Endurance before repeating: attacks, blocks and dodges share that resource. Inference: leave room for defense instead of spending the last of it on another heavy attack.

Inference. Practice this on a familiar ordinary enemy: defend its sequence, counter once, then reset. It is a drill for recognizing openings, not a combo guaranteed against every boss.

Weapons have different answers

Confirmed. The official overview presents swords, guns and magic as complementary tools.

Reported. Fextralife describes different defensive options on the Rapier and Claymore.

Inference. If a long swing repeatedly leaves you exposed, shorten your commitment before changing the entire build. Check weapon capabilities.

Read the cue, not an invented frame chart

Reported. Rock Paper Shotgun illustrates a red cue on an unblockable Risen Soldier attack. This does not prove every red effect has the same meaning.

No universal parry window, dodge duration or damage multiplier is established here. Named encounter evidence is in the boss index.
